Freeman Health System Paves the Way for Schroeder Family Exploreum to Open New Chapter in Joplin Turkey Trot Tradition

(Joplin, MO)The Schroeder Family Exploreum is thrilled to acknowledge the role of Freeman Health System in its acquisition of the beloved Joplin Turkey Trot, an annual Thanksgiving tradition that has united families, friends, and fitness enthusiasts for over 12 years. This exciting new chapter would not be possible without the steadfast support of Freeman, an invaluable partner in this transition. Thanks to Freeman’s continued investment in community wellness and youth development, the Turkey Trot will remain a cornerstone of Joplin’s holiday celebrations while also supporting a powerful new purpose: expanding access to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education for all.

“We could not have taken on this tradition without Freeman Health System,” said Joe Malin, Exploreum Board Member and Event Chair. “Their leadership and early commitment have made it possible for us to preserve the spirit of the Turkey Trot while giving it new life as a fundraiser for hands-on, STEAM based learning.” Audie Dennis, Exploreum Board President, added, “Freeman’s dedication to this event is unmatched. Their support has been the foundation for this exciting transition, and we’re honored to partner with them in this new endeavor.”

The Turkey Trot, held each Thanksgiving morning, will now serve not just as a celebration of health and community, but as a major fundraising event for the Exploreum’s hands-on exhibits, outreach programs, and scholarship initiatives. “This is more than just a race — it’s an investment in the future,” said Neely Myers, Executive Director of the Exploreum. “Thanks to Freeman, proceeds from the Turkey Trot will help ignite curiosity, inspire learning, and make STEAM education more accessible to children and families across the region.”

Freeman Health System President and CEO Matthew Fry added “Our mission is deeply rooted in fostering the health and vitality of every individual we serve, and this commitment extends far beyond the walls of our facilities. We are therefore immensely proud to announce our partnership with the Schroeder Family Exploreum for the continuation of the cherished community tradition, the Turkey Trot.” Fry continued “This partnership is a testament to Freeman Health System’s leadership in championing initiatives that resonate with our core values. It allows us to not only uphold a beloved tradition but also to strategically align our efforts with the broader needs of our community, ensuring a healthier, more vibrant future for all. This collaboration exemplifies our unwavering dedication to the community. We are excited to directly invest in the foundational elements of this community: promoting active lifestyles, encouraging family engagement, and fostering a sense of shared purpose. We firmly believe that the wellness of our community is intrinsically linked to the holistic development of its youngest members, encompassing both their physical and intellectual well-being.”

The inaugural Turkey Trot under Exploreum leadership will take place November 27, 2025, beginning and ending at 300 S. Main in downtown Joplin. The event will include a 5K run/walk and a one-mile family fun run, offering something for all ages and fitness levels. Community members and sponsors are invited to join in continuing this treasured tradition — now with a new mission at its heart.
