(Joplin, MO) – Residents in central neighborhoods in Joplin are encouraged to watch for notifications about sanitary sewer work in their area that will cause a brief interruption of household activities involving the sewer system, such as flushing toilets, taking showers or baths, and doing laundry or dishes. Residents affected by this work will have a door hanger placed on their front doors at least 24 hours prior to the work beginning.
The work zone includes homes in the area from 7th to 20th Streets from Connecticut Avenue to Ohio Avenue and another area includes 7th to 15th Streets from Main Street to Ohio Avenue. Not all households within this tract will be affected by this work.
The City of Joplin received a $3.6 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to renew reliable sanitary service in low to moderate income areas of the community. The City is providing an additional $1,667,000 for this work to be completed.
“This was a competitive grant, and we’re pleased that Joplin was one of the awardees for this important work for our community,” said City Manager Nick Edwards. “It provides the resources to upgrade the sanitary sewer system in the identified neighborhoods that otherwise could not have been addressed. This proactive work helps ensure reliable and uninterrupted sewer capacity and service now and into the future and will help keep residents from having future emergency maintenance and repairs.”
The City has contracted with Municipal Pipe Tool Company LLC of Hudson, Iowa to reline the sewer main that serves homes and businesses. The contractor will install pipe liners into the existing sewer pipeline during the hours of 7:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The work will temporarily seal off the sanitary sewer line for approximately six hours. Start times will vary due to the number of installations being completed each day. If residents use their water during the installation period, it will fill up their service line and could potentially back up into the building.
