Missouri Southern State University’s (MSSU) growing kinesiology program is proud to announce that two new academic programs — a bachelor’s in food science and nutrition and a master’s in sports management — will be implemented in fall 2024.
The food science undergraduate program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of food science, nutrition, and health. The program takes a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing courses in biology, nutrition, microbiology, chemistry, and more for a well-rounded curriculum. The degree delves into the fundamentals of the field such as processing, packaging, food safety, and quality assurance. It will also require an internship for students to gain hands-on experience. In a field that has a 13% job growth rate nationwide, an undergraduate degree in food science is a great addition to MSSU’s expansive academics. The university will be the second university in Missouri to offer this program, a unique opportunity to those interested in pursuing food sciences and nutrition.
“When I started working at MSSU 12 years ago, we offered very few nutrition courses, so seeing this program starting this fall is very exciting,” said Dr. Andrea Cullers, department chair of the kinesiology department. “This is a growing field, especially in our area. Food Science and Nutrition will provide students with so many fantastic career opportunities.”
MSSU will also begin the online Sports Management graduate program this fall. The 30-credit hour program is designed to prepare students for management-level positions within the sports management field and will enhance their communication, leadership, and management skills. The degree will cover marketing, facility design and operation, financial management, and global aspects of sports and recreation. Due to its expedited nature, students can complete the program within one year.
“I’m looking forward to seeing students take the next steps in their education journey so that they can be better qualified for careers in the field of Sport and Recreation Management,” said Cullers.
To be eligible for the Sports and Recreation Management graduate program, potential students may hold an undergraduate degree in any focus with a 3.0 GPA.
