Special Summer Programs at Joplin Public Library

May 28 marks the start of Joplin Public Library’s all-ages Summer Reading Program! This program runs until July 21, with the theme “Adventure Begins at Your Library.”

The JPL Summer Reading Program is a free program designed to keep the public reading, learning, and adventuring all summer. Along with earning prizes for logging reading time, the Library will be hosting fun, educational, and theme-based events. Summer events include many of the Library’s regular programs, and a variety of special events for children, teens, and adults. Find the comprehensive calendar of activities here.

The list includes Emmy-award-winning storyteller Bobby Norfolk, Curt Strutz of Dinosaur Dimensions, musician Will Parker, Max the Magician, and more! Teens will have several chances to connect and be creative this summer. Programs include monthly Crafternoons, a reptiles program with the Missouri Department of Conservation, and several takeout kits. Plus, traditional offerings of chess and anime/manga will remain on the slate of events. Adults also have the opportunity to join in programs, some of which include a guided hike with Wildcat Glades Nature Group, Escape Joplin bringing their mobile escape rooms to the library, and a puzzle competition. The Library will also host several multigenerational programs, including a visit from paleontologist Brad Shelby, educators from Wonders of Wildlife, and several tween activities and family nights.

No Library card is required to participate in the Summer Reading Program; however, for the fourth year, the Joplin Public Library is extending the offer of a free Summer Reading Library card to everyone! You may check out physical items from the Library including books, DVDs, and more and you can use the card to access our digital resources between May 28 to July 21. As always, Joplin Public Library cards are always free for in-city residents of Joplin, simply bring a recent piece of mail and your photo ID to the Library to register.
