New Surgeon Provides Surgical Options at Freeman Neosho

Dr. Kevin Christian brings Operations Closer to Home for Patients

(Joplin, MO) – Approximately 20 million people in the United States have gallstones, and for many that will lead to surgery to remove their gallbladder. Freeman Health System general surgeon Dr. Kevin Christian now provides that surgery and more to patients at Freeman Neosho Hospital.

“We are very happy to have Dr. Christian available in Neosho to perform general surgeries,” said Renee Denton, Freeman Neosho Hospital Chief Operating Officer. “Having a general surgeon available to Neosho allows our community to choose to have their surgery close to home and family.”

Dr. Christian provides quality care combined with an excellent bedside manner and the convenience of outpatient surgery. Whether installing infusaports for cancer patients, repairing hernias or removing gallbladders, he finds joy in helping patients find solutions to their pain and discomfort.

“The thing I enjoy the most with general surgery,” said Dr. Christian, “is the person, for example, who has terrible nausea and pain for years and we figure out it’s their gallbladder. We take it out and all of a sudden they feel like a new person, and they’re so thankful for that.”

Most gallbladder surgery is done laparoscopically, providing for a quicker recovery and better pain control. Dr. Christian is excited about the expansion of minimally invasive surgery.

“Even from when I was an intern, procedures you wouldn’t imagine doing are now requiring smaller and smaller incisions with faster recoveries,” said Dr. Christian. “What was once held true as the absolute way of doing a surgery, we now realize we can do in ways that are minimally invasive and better for the patient.”

Dr. Christian joins other physicians already offering surgical procedures in Neosho, including Dr. Scott McClintick, who performs ENT surgeries, and Dr. Gerald Englund, who performs gynecological surgeries. In addition, Dr. David Seidl performs endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures.
