Neosho, MO – Crowder College Neosho Campus’ Art Faculty members, Josh Knott (Lead Instructor and Instructor of Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking) and Josh Novak (Instructor of Ceramics, Sculpture, and 3D Design) have teamed up for an exhibit in the Longwell Museum, Work in Progress. The exhibit is free and open to the public through January 20, 2022. An artist reception will be held Thursday, December 9 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The museum hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday, closed weekends and holidays.
“The duo uses a variety of materials and processes to grapple with the past few years of absurd and troubling experiences. The ransomware attack in the Fall of 2019 leading into the COVID-19 Spring semester in 2020 significantly impacted the working processes and world view of both artists,” stated Josh Novak. “Like for many around the world, the social and emotional isolation caused by the Pandemic Lockdown allowed past traumas, regrets, and could-have-beens to come to the forefront of their daily lives.”
The exhibit “Work in Progress” aims to pose more questions than answers. The works shown in this exhibition are attempting to do many things; illustrate the struggle to create, acknowledge the reality of failure within the creative process, and try to redefine how the word “failure” functions within the studio alongside the daily struggles that are shared by students and their instructors. Artistic growth, ideas, studio success, all come from work. “Quite often the completed project does not immediately lead to the place initially planned or expected. But at all times, the goal is to get into the studio and make. We hope that the students will take away some encouragement knowing that they are not alone in their struggle. We walk this difficult road together,” stated Novak.
