Freeman Intensivist Honored for Organ Donation Efforts

Dr. Guy Grabau Given Excellence in Donation Award from Midwest Transplant Network

(Joplin, MO) – The Midwest Transplant Network (MTN) honored Dr. Guy Grabau, Freeman Health System Intensivist, with the Individual Excellence in Donation Award on Friday, July 24. MTN thanked Dr. Grabau for his dedication and commitment to partnering with the organization on behalf of Freeman patients and families who generously give the gift of organ, tissue, and eye donation.

There are more than 250 hospitals in the area that MTN serves, and Dr. Grabau was selected as the best of the best. His commitment, leadership and care for his patients and collaboration within the critical care team have led Freeman to meet and exceed expectations for organs transplanted over the past five years. That leads to saving more lives and providing a lasting legacy for donor heroes and their families.

To recognize his commitment, Dr. Grabau was presented with an original piece of art specifically created by Leslie Mason, a Kansas City artist whose whimsical and uplifting artwork celebrates life with a bold and colorful twist. MTN commissioned the artwork to honor lives lived and the life given through organ, eye, and tissue donation. In the piece, a heart represents love, a heartbeat is hope, and a cardinal is a symbol of memories. The cardinal is also wearing a green ribbon, symbolizing support for organ, eye, and tissue donation.

Freeman Health System provides hope to families amid their grief by honoring donors and the gifts they gave through organ, eye, and tissue donation. In 2019, these donor heroes enabled 22 organ transplants and impacted more than 8,000 individuals through tissue and eye donation.
